Iowa’s Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) have given families the freedom to choose the school that best fits their children. But the work of expanding awareness and strengthening school choice doesn’t stop there. Parents, grandparents, and other advocates can continue to make a difference in creative and practical ways. To follow-up on a previous post, here are five more ideas to build momentum
1. Write Local Letters to the Editor
Short, positive letters in community newspapers are still powerful. Share how ESAs made your child’s education possible or why school choice matters to families like yours. A well-placed letter in your hometown paper can reach hundreds of neighbors—and it often gets noticed by local lawmakers, too
2. Volunteer at School Choice Events
Many Christian, private, and homeschool groups host open houses, ESA workshops, and rallies at the Capitol. Parents and grandparents can volunteer to greet families, help with sign-ups, or share personal stories. Your presence shows broad community support and helps events run smoothly
3. Build Coalitions Through Churches and Civic Groups
Churches, Rotary Clubs, and senior centers are natural places for grandparents and parents to talk about educational options. Hosting a short “lunch and learn” or inviting a school leader to speak can spark conversations that spread awareness far beyond social media
4. Share Helpful Resources Online
Families are hungry for clear, accurate information about ESAs and school choice in Iowa. Posting links to official ESA guidance from the Iowa Department of Education makes you a trusted source in your network. Create a simple “resource roundup” on Facebook or LinkedIn that others can easily share.
(Sharing resources from this website is also welcome too!)
5. Mentor New ESA Families
For families navigating the ESA process for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. Parents who have already applied can serve as informal mentors—walking others through deadlines, answering questions, and offering encouragement. A quick coffee meet-up or phone call can be all it takes to help a new family succeed.
Moving the Movement Forward
Everyone has a role to play in strengthening school choice in Iowa. By writing letters, volunteering, building community coalitions, sharing resources, and mentoring new families, you’re ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive in the learning environment that fits them best.
Together, we can ensure ESAs deliver real opportunities that help Iowa children thrive.
